General Guidelines

Apnea is Latin for “without breath”. Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), is the partial or complete closure of breathing passages during sleep. This loss of air flow to the lungs can last for up to 40 seconds. The body responds to this lack of oxygen by arousing, or waking from sleep, sometimes unknowingly to the person, for a brief period before restarting their breathing process again.
The symptoms of OSA cross over to being both the day time and night time. They are:-
    Day Time:
  • Waking with a dry mouth or sore throat
  • Early morning headache
  • Daytime fatigue and lethargy
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Learning and memory difficulties
  • Irritability
  • Depression
  • Sexual Dysfunction

  • Night Time:
  • Chronic and disruptive snoring
  • Witnessed pauses of breathing whilst sleeping
  • Gasping for air during sleep
  • Insomnia
  • Restless legs
  • Teeth grinding
  • Nocturia – frequent visits to the bathroom
CPAP signifies Continuous Positive Airway Pressure. CPAP therapy provides a constant airflow which holds the airway open so that uninterrupted breathing is maintained during sleep. This eliminates sleep apnea’s and allows for a restful sleep.
There are so many health benefits from CPAP therapy. CPAP therapy ends many of the breathing problems that interrupt your rest, so you feel more refreshed when you wake and some of the benefits are instantaneous:
  • Breathing and snoring issues discontinue
  • An increase of concentration and memory
  • An increase of daily energy by feeling refreshed and refuelled
  • Risk reduction of depression by stabilising your moods
  • Reduced blood pressure levels
  • Improved mindset contributing to weight loss and healthier lifestyle
  • Risk reduction of heart disease
  • Reduced risk of workplace accidents
  • Longer life expectancy and overall improved quality of life
CPAP therapy works by blowing air into your throat via a mask or nasal pillow, subtly increasing air pressure and preventing the airway from narrowing. A constant pressure is maintained while the machine gently blows the pressurised air through the airway.
The therapy consists of 4 parts that work in conjunction to perform.
  • CPAP machine – acts as a compressor to draw in the room temperature air and pressurises it, and gently delivers the right amount of air to the user
  • Humidifier Chamber – air passes over the water in the humidifier chamber (water tank) to collect extra moisture particles. Its then carried at a controlled temperature to the mask on the face
  • CPAP hose – A tube that connects the machine to the mask and the transfer of pressurised air to the user
  • CPAP masks or nasal pillows – A mask that covers the nostrils (nasal pillow / nasal mask) as well as the mouth (full face mask). They are available in different shapes and sizes
If you suspect you may have some sleep related problems, you should consult your General Practitioner. Sleep Apnea is a serious and potentially fatal medical condition. If you feel you may suffer from this type of disorder you should be tested as soon as possible.
We offer a Sleep Apnea Quiz which can help you determine if you suffer from symptoms of Sleep Apnea. Complete this quiz, print and take with you for your initial appointment with your General Practitioner. This will assist your physician to evaluate your condition and possible symptoms of Sleep Apnea.
No, there is no need to provide Sӧrgen Medical a prescription to purchase our CPAP products. However, if you are new to using a CPAP machine and the associated accessories, we recommend that you acquire guidance from your General Practitioner to familiarise yourself with the uses of a CPAP.
The Dream Sleep auto CPAP machine is programmed with a sophisticated algorithm and automatically adjusts to your breathing patterns. Our auto CPAP machine is set to a default range of 4 to 20 cm H2O and will detect and accommodate all pressures within that range. This will minimize the amount of testing you need to have done to get started on your treatment.
Even if your health changes in any way (e.g. if you lose weight or are diagnosed with another condition), the machine will recalibrate so that it will deliver the optimal pressure without the need for another titrating study in a lab.
Therefore, one of the best features of our auto CPAP machine is that it can find your ideal pressure even if you are unsure of it. Even if you are sure of your optimal pressure at one point, the perfect pressure level for you will likely change. This is because the severity of your Sleep Apnea will ebb and flow over time. The constant adjustments of the auto CPAP are essential to ensure that you continue to get the most out of your CPAP therapy, even as your needs change over time.

CPAP Device Guidelines

When you first start using CPAP, there is often a short adjustment period. To assist with this process, we suggest that you just wear your mask or nasal pillow in short periods of time while you are awake. Eg. watching television. The next step would be to fully utilise the CPAP system. Eg. wear the mask and hose with the device turned on. Once you get used to how that feels, start using the CPAP system every time you sleep, including nap time. Consistency is the key in successful treatment and creating new healthy habits.
It takes time to adjust to CPAP therapy and for each individual, the response to therapy varies. Depending on the severity Sleep Apnea, some people have dramatic improvements from their first full night’s treatment, and yet for others, the positive effects are cumulative. It is important to be regularly consistent in using the treatment to feel an overall improvement. Seeking opinion from the person who sleeps next to you is also another approach to sourcing feedback.
Beginners sometime have difficulty in getting used to the forced air from the CPAP device. You may be able to overcome this by using the “ramp” feature. This is a setting that allows you to start with low air pressure and the machine slowly and automatically increases the air pressure to your prescribed setting as you fall asleep. Persistence and repetition are fundamental to overcoming the new practice of breathing through a mask.
There is no actual maintenance required for the CPAP device, however to ensure the longevity of the device and for optimal health, we recommend the following:-
  • Carefully remove water tank chamber daily from the humidifier, empty existing water and wash in warm water with a mild detergent. Do not place in dishwasher or washing machine. Fill chamber with distilled, sterile or filtered water
  • Once a week the water tank chamber should be soaked in a solution of 1 part white vinegar 3 parts water for approximately 15-20 minutes before rinsing thoroughly with distilled, sterile or filtered water
  • Always check the water tank chamber for damage, pitted areas, cracks and that the seal positions securely around the tank. Replace this component at least every six months
  • Check the air filter and replace it at least every 6-8 weeks. Replace it more often if there are any signs of wear and discolouration
  • Do not use bleach, chlorine, alcohol, or aromatic-based solutions, moisturising or antibacterial soaps or scented oils to clean the device, the water tank or air tubing
Due to the tubing carrying pressurised air from your device to your mouth, over time it can develop small tears. We recommend replacing the tubing every 3 months.
Tap water is mineral rich, and it can cause a film that materialises as a white dust. Also, failure to change the water daily in the humidifier tank will promote bacteria and mould growth. These white dust traces can be released into the air you breathe and can quickly develop into respiratory and lung conditions. Always use distilled, demineralised or filtered water as these waters have less mineral content.
The measurements for the CPAP device are:-
Length: 28cm (11”)
Width: 14cm (5.5”)
Depth: 9cm (3.5”)
Device Weight: 1.58kg
Device in carry case with powerlead: 2.85kg

Mask Guidelines

Just like other frequently used health products, such as your toothbrush, it is important to replace your CPAP mask. Our recommendations are:
  • CPAP full face & nasal mask every 3 months
  • CPAP nasal pillows and cushions every 2 weeks
  • CPAP mask headgear and chinstraps every 6 months
It is important to remember that improper cleaning of your mask will mean a shorter lifespan. Cleaning your mask every day is a very important part of mask maintenance, its longevity and your health. What is the best way to clean my mask? Oils and obsolete skin cells from your face and hands can build up on your mask and cause irritation or a poor mask seal. And cleaning your mask daily will extend the life of your mask. Here are some easy steps for you to follow:
  • Dissemble the mask as per the instructions for use
  • Wash the mask components in warm, mild soapy water and air dry
  • Wash your face thoroughly before using the mask. Avoid using skin lotions, just prior to putting on the mask
  • Regularly inspect your mask to assess for any hardened cushions or damage
If you mask is not fitted properly or you don’t put it on correctly, it can leak around the edges and be very noisy. The leak is not harmful, but it could prevent the prescribed levels of pressure from being delivered and your sleep may be disrupted.
  • Assure your masked is fitted properly. The straps may need adjusting to allow for a better fit of the mask
  • Consider switching from a full face mask to a nasal mask, in conjunction with a chin strap. There is less surface area to cover and your mouth will be closed by the chin strap to avoid mouth breathing
  • Maybe the pressure is too high on your device at initial use. Try using the Ramp feature to ‘ease’ up to your prescribed pressure
  • You mask and straps may be worn out and purchasing a new mask may solve this problem
  • Using heated humidification adds warm moisture to the air you are breathing and eases dryness in the mouth. Try increasing the humidity level on your device
  • Air may be escaping through your mouth. You may need a chin strap to keep your mouth closed during sleeping
  • Utilising a full face mask, instead of a nasal mask or nasal pillow is another solution
